Bunkie, what are you putting in the fall garden?
I'm scared of moose.
I got stuck inside a quick stop market in Banff, because a moose decided to graze the front of the store. They are huge!

A native friend didn't grow vegetables. I didn't hunt moose. So we traded.

yum caribou!!! i remember it well when we lived in Alaska! catching up here...some fall gardening this year...Kohlrabi, short season cabbage, baby (round parisienne) carrots, more lettuce (i have a couple summer type lettuce to try) and greens, broccoli, more radishes, so far. i'm sure i'll think of more and soon.... we're eating loads of radishes now. unheard of, having our first radish in july? ! i'm readying to make some Rosie Red Radish Relish today! both our new gardens are looking super. the tom plants are loaded with greenies waiting to ripen. i've got one row where the leaves are curled upward. no signs of disease, just weird curling. they have plenty of water...not too much. i think it might be the cold weather we've been having. the corn's still a bit short, but looking good. i'm surprized they aren't all bent over with the strong winds we've been had. the cukes are loaded with blossoms as are the summer squash plants and pepper plants. baby squashes soon to harvest, yum! some of the cabbages are starting to head. the beans are still taking their time. the potatoes are coming along nicely. the other day we brought out the ones from last year in our basement and planted them...the ones with the long sprouts like joseph's mystery plant! ;D so far we've been picking rhubarb, cherries and strawberries. it's jam makin' time! will post more pics soon...looks like rain today...

Beautiful garlic Bunkie! How interesting that we've had opposing weather and opposing garlic results. The purple in your hand is SO beautiful! What variety is it?

jo, i'm pretty sure it's the 'Shandong'. there's another variety, 'Simonetti', that's of equal size and color. we had 23 varieties in all. even the white ones were so beautiful this year!

Wow.... What are your water figures for this past growing season? If we get out of the drought, I'd like to try growing those.

hubs is in charge of the water and irrigation, so he'd probably know. ew have two five thousand gallon tanks. a few yeaars ago we dug a well and hit water at 90 plus feet. hubby hooked up a solar panel to a solar pump and he rotates it as the sun moves across the sky. it pumps water into the tanks which then drip into our irrigation system. it's a neat setup, and so amazing to watch water pumped by the sun!
i mulch everything thickly and that saves on the water. plus, hubby's in the process of cutting the irrigation into sections in both gardens. it will save on water, aand water more thoroughly with lines less long. all part of the learning process!!!
when do you plant your garlic jo? i'll see if i can get a bulb or two off to you.
