Welcome to HG, Highhorse. That was a tough start with a storm like that, but that's Life on the Farm. Lots of knowledge here. I'm sure you can find answers to your questions.

Hello all. This is my first post. I just found this forum and I am so glad that I did. I am a bit wet behind the ears so I will likely ask too many questions and provide too little uselul information. In any event, I hope to stay involved. Good night from Northern Nova Scotia, Canada.

Welcome cmarchan! Don't worry about asking 'too many' questions. The people here at HG are extremely gracious about sharing their knowledge & opinions. You'll receive a lot of good advice here.

Welcome cmarchan, I found out that no question is a bad question on this site. People really like to share.

Thanks for the kind words. I am always amazed at the generosity and genuine goodness of people on sites such as this one. I browzed this forum a bit before signing up and I have to say that this looks to be one of the best sites I have come across. I have to go read some goodnight stories to a little one but I will be back

I'm sure I have no idea whatsoever about the ecosystem of Nova Scotia. I hope you will inform me.

cmarchan, Nova Scotia! One of my favourite places. Where, if I may ask, are you? I have family in Stellarton. (And welcome!)

We live in Antigonish. Small world. Nova Scotia has a climate that is moderated greatly by the ocean. As compared to Ontario or Quebec N.S has warmer winters and cooler summers. The forest (or what remains of it) is called an Acadian forest which means it has characterstics of the boreal forest and deciduous forest too. The soil is poor for farming except in a few places. The soil is often acidic (naturally) and this is exasterbated by the acid rain problem. I always save the ashes/charcoal from our wood furnace to throw on the garden. The growing season is short which means tomatoes, peppers etc.. have to be transplanted into the garden after spending time under a lamp or greenhouse plastic. Season extension techniques are very important to growers around here. I bought Eliot Colemans book recently and it is like a bible to me.the demand for quality veggies and fruit is increasing and farmers markets are really making a comeback. Access to the coastline and all its bounty is so very easy and I use eelgrass and algae often. I am relatively new to gardening but I am learning as I continue. I would be happy to entertain any questions about this neck of the woods should someone have them.

Oh, just down the street then. I love Nova Scotia and we debated moving there after we retired but all our family are here, and with parents getting older we decided it just didn't make sense. I love the cooler NS summers, but I think you are giving those NS winters too much credit...!
We have used a lot of ideas from Eliiot Coleman too. Great book.

Hi from the other half of ferdzy's garden. I see you are 5a - just a hair colder than we are - and hopefully a lot wetter, at least this year.

Hi All,
Hoping a moderator sees this and can help! I have been reading the forum for a while and decided to register. Before I even posted, I seemed to get banned, i'm unsure why. My previous username was rowan57. I have registered under a different email account as i couldn't figure out any other way of contacting a moderator.
Can anyone help?
Thank you! Rowan

Sorry, I probably banned you. We have been having spammer issues here and they tend to have names ending in numbers. It's hard for me to keep track of all the active members here. I can reinstate the rowan57 if you want. But I will ask that you please change your ''display name''. See, we already have a very active member named Rowan and I don't want any confusion.
To change your ''display name''- Click on profile (Up near logout). Then click modify profile. Under your email addy is "Display Name''. This is what you need to change. Any questions? Feel free to PM me.
