Hi, I'm johno.
I'm an Ozarks hillbilly. I grew up in the hills, and leaving them turned out to be like kryptonite to Superman. So, I'm back - have been for over a decade...
I used to be a log home builder. I enjoy all things primitive... I just love preserving hillbilly ways.
Unfortunately for me, I had a neckbone grow into my spinal cord and almost ended up like Christopher Reeves. So, swinging an axe will not be a full-time job again anytime soon. Now I write and work in the Heirloom Seed Shop in Norfork, Arkansas. The profits from seed sales go directly to the Foodbank of North Central Arkansas to help feed the hungry. There are plenty of disadvantaged folks around here, so I couldn't think of a better way to spend two days a week.
Gardening is an obsession and a passion for me, so that's what most of my time is spent on, now that I don't work much. It takes me a week to do what used to take a day, but that just means I have to start my projects a little earlier...

Nice to have you Johno. That seed shop is a really great idea, I visited the link and really liked that. It's great that your work helps the needy. Times like this people need all the help they can get! Hand hueing is hard work, I did a bit of it with my grandfather in appalatian KY a few years ago. It is very rewarding. Sorry to hear about your back and I hope you get it all sorted out. Glad to have you as a friend!

Awesome article. I didn't realize how cool of a project the seed shop was, sounds like a really good place to spend time.

Johno, did you get any offers of assistance with a tractor as was mentioned in the paper?? Or offers of marriage after they saw your studly photo? ;D Great article, Johno... When you're a big heirloom seed celebrity, please remember us - the lowly undergrowth. ;D

It's great that the seed shop is getting some good press. Their 50 cent seeds I bought last year are germinating just fine so I'll definitely buy from them again.
Those were some very nice photos of your garden. You look just as nice as you seem on these forums-what an open, friendly face and smile. It's good to get a glimpse of the shop and of you!

No offers yet (for the tractor, that is...) But a kindly master gardener from across the river offered his rototilling services. I got his number, of course! He agrees that I picked a good spot, and that it wouldn't hurt to break it up with a tractor the first time...

I think that seedshop is so cool and i'm glad there good folks like you left in the world to help people out the way you do!
Definetly get that roto-tiller in there, you will really appreciate, just don't get it in there too often or you will start to degrade your soil structure which is something I'm now strugling with in a few spots!

My plan is to grow about three green manure crops there this year, and return them to the Earth. That way, it should be good and ready next spring.
