Eat the goutweed before it eats the garden! Mmm green sauce. I make my kids green pancakes which are just green sauce with flour and eggs.
I know what you mean seedywen, it's surprising (or not given the history of gardening) that so many of our plants are edible/useful.

Yes have read about goutweed's medicinal properties but it's taste is what I'm wondering about. Yarrow is medicinal and I have oodles in my garden but it's taste is, for me....unpatable even as taken as a tea.
Made the mistake of introducing goutweed to my border, many years ago. It will outlive me, in the garden, am pretty sure.

Ive got several basil to try this year, and did get Holy basil seed- please post pics of yours! Should be easy enough to keep only one type flowering at a time towards the end of the season (i hope!)
Ive tried stevia, and I just dont get it. Its OK as 1-2 leaves in a green smoothie (like kale and bananas and pineapples), but I find in anything else it just tastes too green/bitter. but, I love cilantro and my DH says it tastes like soap, YMMV.

I figure anything that's grown without pest/herbicides and isn't toxic per se is medicinal in that it's nutricious. I noted a good growth of shepherd's purse on the farm today; I've not tried it before, but I'll give it a shot if I get it before the heat comes. Probably good for what ails me, or would ail me if I weren't proactive about eating my veggies.

Just make sure you get the right type of Tulsi, there are several strains. Krishna tulsi prbably has the best aroma (it smells sort of like a cross between thai basil and watermelon candy) though some of the others are a bit more medically active (most commecial blends use a mix of them)

What is the implication if it is patented ? I understand no one else can sell it , but is it genetically altered other than by selective breeding methods?

I'm putting my herbals where my mouth is at the moment. I've been touting a specific recipe as a powerful antibiotic. A couple days ago I sliced open my wrist which needed 4 stitches. I was given prescriptions for pain and for an antibiotic. I refused (but thanks for offering) a tetanus shot. The antibiotic would have cost about $13 so I said "no thanks" to that as well, seeing as I have no insurance.
My recipe is: 1 c. thyme tea 1 c. lemon juice (store bought sadly) 1 c. honey Blend well and store in clean jar.
Thyme tea: Bring 1 c. plus 2 T. water to boil in a small pot. When boiling, add 2 T. dried thyme leaves, remove from heat, cover, and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Strain and use.
DOSAGE: About 2 T. every few hours for 2 to 3 days. I'm taking mine "on the 3s" meaning at 3, 6, 9, and 12. If I'm asleep, I don't worry about it.
Previous results: I used this formula with very good results on a toothache about a year ago. A friend is giving it to her adult daughter who is suffering from a boil. Another friend used it for a sore throat and mild cold on herself and her 5 yr old son and reported good results. It takes approximately 48 hours for pain relief.

this is a topic I am very interested in. I have a form of liver disease that basically makes it a nightmare for me with pharohoaxicals coupled with a hatred for same pharmogiants. I can't take even tylenol for more than a day or two without liver pain.

I was poking at the hoax that is big pharmacuitical (sp?) companies.
I have non hepatitis a b c liver disease. My liver gets mad at most things that the liver metabolizes. Alchohol, tylenol, stuff like that.
