For mild stomach upsets, my mom always gave her kids & grandkids some room temperature tap water with hard peppermint candy dissolved in it. (the hard red & white swirly peppermint candies) For babies, it was 1 piece of candy dissolved in 4 ounces of water & more for older kids. It always seemed to work, even with colic.

Seriously? That's a new one on me. I'll have to give it a shot. A peppermint would take AGES to dissolve at room temp though... hmmmm.. Thanks for a new idea!

Yup, she used that little home remedy with 4 kids, 8 grandkids, herself & my dad. You could always boil the water to help dissolve it, but my mom never did. She hated the 'taste' of boiled water... She said it tasted 'flat'. What she did was chop it up and/or powder the hard candy to help it dissolve completely.

boiled water tastes flat huh? Well, there are definitely tongues more sensitive than mine and I don't think there is anything worse that water you don't like the taste of. I'll be giving this remedy a try!
JOHN! ::snicker:: I am SHOCKED AND APPALLED!!! ::snicker snicker::

Any kind of schnapps kept in the freezer never really quite freezes, it just gets a little slushy. I used to keep apple schnapps & peppermint schnapps in the freezer. Yum!

I wonder if peppermint tea would have a similar effect.
BTW, circumspice, I've been wondering, what does luceo non uro mean?

I've been wondering too. The Latin translates as "I shine without burning," but I'm sure there is an underlying cultural meaning that Spice will have to give us.

*grins* Luceo non uro does indeed translate roughly to: I shine, not burn. It's a motto I saw on a coat of arms. Circumspice is also Latin. It roughly translates to: Look around you. It is pronounced: keer-coom-spee-kay. Latin has no soft C. Thus only the Germans seem to pronounce Caesar correctly. (Kaiser)

In fact, here in the US we have a commercial peppermint tea called Tummy Tea or something like that. But kids don't seem to like it much.

Wow! There I was thinking "Luceo Non Uro" meant "Don't Pee Without Turning On the Light".

Well dang! I got another kidney infection. It's been about 4-5 years since the last one, I think. This one knocked me down in the early morning hours of the 9th. I was outside tending to my tiny container garden, lifting & moving several really heavy pots. When the lower back pain started, I lied to myself & told myself that I had slightly injured my back. I took some acetaminophen, BIG mistake because it is bad for your liver & kidneys. By evening I was in shrieking, screaming pain. The next morning, I admitted that I had a kidney infection & dug out my "Macedonian herbal tea" & started dosing myself. By mid morning I was praying for death. I just kept steeping & drinking the tea, 2 bags per cup, 3 times a day. By the 3rd day, I was beginning to feel some relief. So I kept up the regimen. Today is the 5th day since onset & I am now beginning to feel human again. I didn't experience the relief as quickly this time, probably because the tea is out-dated. I'm just glad that I didn't throw it out like I was inclined to do. Oddly enough, the herbal tea turns your urine a clear, pale green. It has a 'not unpleasant' taste. But it leaves an odd, indescribable after taste that lingers for hours. It's somewhat oily too, you can see a slight oil slick floating on the surface of the tea. I think I will try to grow the various herbs that comprise the ingredients of both of the different brands that I have. The only evidence I have of its effectiveness is my own personal experiences with it.
