Well I have been quiet for a long time, but it appears that one of my Green Mountain plants are going to flower. (One plant that has split into three. There are two flower buds shooting up currently.) Sorry, no pictures now.

I planted mine late, it's been a cold spring, and they've only just got to the point where I could plant them out. Never mind, as long as they get through the summer, they'll have time to get bigger. I've still got plenty of seed for next year.

I just checked my selections from summer - I've got ~50 onions from selection #1 to do an increase, and at least as many again from secondary selections, topsetting potato onions, and another first generation growout including a couple of jumbo single bulbs from the second seed lot. And the child bulbs from the great big singleton that came from the first lot of seeds, and which i grew separately - It's too hard to throw things away. Where are they going to go? Not to mention the seed for the input of new material from billw. We are semi-seriously looking at moving to somewhere with a shed, decent soil, and a reliable water allocation, but can't decide where to live in our dotage. T

I harvested seed-grown PO's today that went to seed themselves this year. I got the seed from Kelly Winterton. I grew the plants last year and let them overwinter in my polytunnel. They almost all flowered and set seed. There is quite a diversity among them. I had one plant that just divided normally and didn't flower and another one didn't divide at all but sent up this massive flower stalk and made no bulb. I am looking forward to spring plant these bulbs next year to see what they'll be like. It didn't get much seed. Despite having counted around 100 flower heads there was very little seeds in them. I still have more than i need but nothing to give away since i already have a whole bunch of people that want some. You wouldn't believe how long it took me to harvest and clean these seeds! I wish i had a proper sieve. It would be so much quicker. I had potato onions i got from Ireland flower alongside the others so i hope they crossed. Planting them in autumn seems to make them run to seed the following year. I noticed better seed set on the plants grown from Kelly's seed than on the irish PO's. I also grew another 70 plants from seed this year that i ll evaluate for onion size, dividing habit and storage ability next year.

@phillip, very similar looking to mine. Perhaps my climate is better for seed production, I got maybe 500 ml of dried seed. raymondo, south west victoria was what i meant. Warnambool, Portland, Nelson. But having second thoughts, its pretty cold down there, but nice soil. Good spud country. Might keep working my day job half time, which means staying in Bendigo. t

Well done Phillp, plenty of seed there. The easiest way to process Allium seed is wait till a warm dry day , put the seed and chafe into a bucket of water and float off the hollow seed and chafe, the good seed sits on the bottom, then spread it out on a tray and dry as fast as you can.

There is actually more seeds than in the photo. I put the cut stalks into a bucket of water. I hope the irish potato onion is different to Kelly Winterton's original strain. If someone wants some irish potato onion seeds pm me. Although i don't have much i could probably give away small amounts.

I've had one potato onion set seed. It has divided and now I have a good number of them and they all produce seeds though of course it's all the same plant. I was given a heap of seeds by another board member and have about 20 plants that have overwintered and are just beginning to grow again as spring approaches. Keen to see what they produce bulb-wise and of course seed-wise.
