I organized my tomato and pepper seed last night to prepare for seed starting. I still have about 50 varieties of seed on paper plates that need to be put in envelopes and indexed. Super hot peppers will be started today along with a few tomatoes for early spring sales. Now I need to put together my list of varieties to grow for 2015.
Sunlucky - This was the most outstanding plant in my garden last year earning rave reviews for flavor and more than a few requests for plants this year.
Blueberry Sugar - I've been working on this one for a few years now and look forward to finally stabilizing a sweet blue/black cherry size tomato.
Piennolo X LA0417 F2 - This will be the first generation with segregation. I plan to select for enhanced disease and pest tolerance from the S. Pimpinellifolium parent along with flavor and long storage ability from Piennolo.
Other than these, I have a dozen or so breeding lines to move forward with and at least 50 varieties that I need fresh seed from.
Have you got your seed planting organized yet?

Have you got your seed planting organized yet? I'm not even close... However this fall when I was saving seeds I got smarter about it. The seeds are mostly getting sorted as they go into storage. So all the tomato seeds that I'm intending to plant are together in the same envelope. I already planted some hybrid tomatoes from the promiscuously pollinating tomatoes project. Going to attempt to get seeds from them this winter. They are currently under grow lights. I hate houses that don't have large south facing windows. I'm starting to think about which crops I want to plant next spring, and which fields to put them in for proper isolation, and stewing about the ability of the owners of the various fields to hang onto them for the entire growing season, and availability of irrigation, and my ability to tend them. I want to plant lots more beans this summer, and more large canning tomatoes, and fewer Jagodka. Garlic and sunroots are already planted. I'm thinking that I want to start growing a flour corn. That'll mess with isolation.

I just did a seed inventory. It was painful. A whole day in the freezer and logging seeds in the computer. I log them when they come in, but sometimes during planting I don't mark which ones were used up. As seeds are saved we do package and label them, but then they have to get in the proper bags.
Each year it gets harder to pick tomatoes. I have ones I love, and many I haven't tried.
From last year I want to plant: Strawberry Marguerita (go Dar!) Non-cracking beafsteak (finally) Tappy's Heritage - a good salad size. Verde Claro = Yummy but not very productive Eva x Nar - Officially our replacement for Early Girl. WE have to plant Sungold & Black Cherry
So for canners: San Marzano 2 Ludmilla's Red Plum Costoluto Genovese
Colors: RG Bold Green (Dar...what size is this?) Lincoln Adams - Pink Yoder's German Yellow
Others:
Del Lenco from Ilex. (We really liked Cuarantena!) Goose Creek
Cherries: Gold Keeper Medovaya Kapla Kazachka Muscato
That's 18 for the year. Which is one too many. I might have to weed out a cherry. So which to do? Medovaya or Kazachka? And I still have to squeeze in Piennolo!
So many tomatoes, so little time.
I have to plant by January 15.

I can't set out warm season stuff until the middle of May at best. Guess I still have a while yet before I have to fire up the grow lights. That said, I guess I really ought to put the seeds in packets that are covering the bookshelves on paper plates

I've started sorting seeds, but not yet picking what to plant; that's somewhat dependent on how much rain comes and soil prep I get done in the next 6 weeks.

I don't think I will have room for much more. I might do a few switches or try to fit Cowlick's Brandywine, Sunset's Red Horizon, or Abraham Lincoln. We will see. I would like to grow something other than tomatoes and peppers lol.

Woo Hoo! About 93 days before I can start planting the main crop of peas in my big fields. I might plant a few dozen seeds in a small bed at lower elevation (warmer micro-climate) in about 80 days. I'll start the tomatoes in the greenhouse in about 127 days. They can go into the field in about 169 days. Woo Hoo! Almost planting time.
As if planting ever stops. Today I trudged through the mud, and planted one more garlic bulb. It was a hardnecked, marbled purple striped that's been sitting next to my computer keyboard since August. The cloves were still in perfect shape, so I figured that it deserved to be planted because of i value the phenotype of "long-keeper". Tomorrow I'm intending to plant oyster mushrooms.

There is no "down-time" for the committed gardener/farmer. I just spent a couple hours perusing garden porn and making lists; so much to grow, so little time. I've got to get stuff scarified and into the fridge to stratify. Lord! Only weeks to go before I'll be falling behind in seeding for transplants.
