Dam bloody cold this morning with snow on the foothills, and a frost that looks to have knocked the pumpkins, potatoes and corn. Peak of summer!!

Had coatless weather from Christmas to New Year. Now another cold wave, but only down to 10F or 15F last night That would be about -7 or -8C. Just figured it in my head but it is close enough. Typical for Kansas this time of year. But about anything could be called typical in Kansas this time of year. We old timers keep a heavy coat and a quilt is the car all winter, cause you never know.

richardw: I envy your vista, though maybe not your climate. I suspect the Coast Range west of the farm is pretty snowy (though not as obviously majestic), but I couldn't see the peaks last week, as the clouds were too low. The Coast Range doesn't compare to your mountains, nor to the Rockies of our Utah co-conspirators, but it's growing, as the tectonic plates move.

Yes well i suppose if we could find that perfect climate we would all want to live there, she's a challenging climate here alright which would have to one of the most variable anywhere in the world apart from maybe Tasmania or Patagonia, ya gota work with what ya got.

By far the heaviest mid summer frost ive had in the 15 years gardening here, they are normally so light that there's no damage. These Green Chestnut inter planted with Whangaparoa Crown for crossing aren't to badly hit though

Light snow last night and this morning. Maybe 4" total. Almost no wind so very little drifting. Very pleasant in the house.

Tad chilly here also. About and inch and a half of snow and very close to zero F last couple mornings. Me and the dog just came in from a short walk, beautiful out there with every surface, tree branch and blade of grass sparkling as the sun came up.

November here was much warmer than average, December was much colder than average (even considering an extremely rare Christmas Day thunderstorm), so those two months averaged each other out. January has been mundanely average so far and the same is forecast through the next two weeks. We are light on snow total so far this winter but I am not complaining because it means less effort doing snow removal on the place as well as cleaner roads and safer winter driving conditions. Lots of winter ahead yet to get that snow total up, I am sure the season will not disappoint. Garlic, potato onion, and shallot beds are all covered in an 8-10 inch layer of crusty snow, as long as they have that blanket I am content.
We have gained 13 minutes of daylight since the solstice, every second of increase makes me happy although I acknowledge it is purely a psychological thing for me at this point. First task of the new season will be the early starting of seeds indoors, then comes grape vine and fruit tree pruning, then the maple syruping. Which reminds me that I need to order some more spiles and lines so I can tap more trees this year. My goal for 2017 is 15 gallons of finished maple syrup, which can be accomplished if I tap more trees.

Started the year off with two storms in two days each putting down about a foot of powder, with a low of -29.4f and highs in the -10s. Today it warmed to the high 30s and rained for an hour or so.

After the heaviest mid summer frosts a few days ago tropical air is due over the next few days with 23C - 73F over night lows expected. What a roller coaster summer this has been.

Deep freeze here, not much snow but very cold, esp. the wind, running in the low 20 s C. Supposed to get down to -31c on Thursday then start to warm up, getting supposedly to plus temps next week. Although there's a joke video going around put out by the weather network that they tell us this so we don't all give up hope.
