So sorry to hear about your sister, reed; she is, no doubt, in a better place; I hope you have other siblings; I have one brother (12 years younger) who's only exercise is golf (so presidential); I worry, counting on him to stand on the air-line if I'm trapped in a hospital; I doubt he'll out-live me; only the good die young. So many people prefer to think we aren't really part of the ecosystem, but how irrational is that? Jesus saves? Right; Moses invests; Mohammad requires; Buddha speculates; Sartre gambles. Theological speculation is exactly that; that's why I like gardening/farming; it's real life, not speculative bullshit.
Smoke was bad enough in the SF Peninsula that 60+ flights were cancelled from SF airport yesterday.
I would suppose your trees are being felled by fungi (root-rot); lots of that happening here; lots of trees that seemed to survive the drought have been felled after record rain set the fungi loose. It's an ill wind that blows no good (for something); that's the beauty of the ecosystem: something gets trashed; something else gets happy as a pig in shit; everybody gets a turn and we're all family, anyway. Yee-hah! Whose turn next on the carousel?

White air is so thick today that I can't see SF across the bay

Can't say I know, only always clear as a bell, except for infrequent morning fog. Couple miles, I think.
Cheers that things are good for you; it's a blessing that some get jam while others get shit on their toast. Live long and prosper; we're counting on you to survive the Norcoppolypse currently being promoted by our "lieder".

Air was clear in the Bay Saturday morn, but there was an appalling pall of smoke over Napa/Sonoma counties; coming home through Capay Valley today, lots of smoke drifting east from those.
Night on the farm is becoming sweet: sitting out needs a watch-cap and heavy jacket, not yet double jeans weather; could this be the year I get quilted pants?
Light rain is wishfully predicted late in the week; heavy would be disastrous on burned-off slopes, but light rain could only be a blessing.
Yo, Dar! Still got that rain-rattle? Get a shake on, Dude.

39 here! Clear sky, may seem some radiant cooling frost damage. Winter does seem to be trying, but then we go back into a warming trend for at least a week.
Hope Cali gets some rain and they can get those fires under control.

Cloudy morning here, sun may burn the cloud later, supposed to warm over the next few days with warm air off Australia, hopefully with no smoke attached.

Last week a frost was predicted, but it didn't hit my garden. Again last night frost was predicted. Again it didn't happen in my garden. Both time some gardens in the area were damaged. Just lucky, this time.

71 degrees F. Forecast for high sixties low seventies most of the the week with night time temps as high as sixty degrees. I am putting away the hoses and lawn furniture but it is that time of year. One squash still on the vine in the garden and three chile plants looking quite healthy.

Almost two weeks past our average killing frost, with still no sign of it in the long term forecast. Warming back up to the 70's all this week. On the plus side, this has given all of the late-planted seed crops time to ripen, and some of the bean yields have been huge. The rows of pole limas at home were completely harvested, but the vines have now re-sprouted vigorously... they won't have time to ripen, but the "lima wall" is a pleasant site from the kitchen window.
If there's a downside to this extended summer, it is that I don't have the heart to kill plants which are still producing... I generally leave that task to the frost. I'll need to overcome that reluctance this week, to clear a row for garlic before the soil turns to muck.

Mid spring and grass is growing flat out, so much so that George our boar goat cant keep up with the lawn, come on George, pull ya bloody finger out, the more you eat the less lawn i need to mow. I think after three dry years it seems it wants to make up for lost time.

Four days past our average first frost. Almost had one two nights ago but it didn't do any damage. Long beans still producing mightily, which is impressive for they don't really get going until we have a week+plus spell of hot weather. But I guess once established they take every opportunity. I should learn from them.

Sunny, but wind strong enough that riding bicycle isn't in order. Certainly not cross wind. Against the wind would be like climbing uphill. With the wind might be fun, but how would I get home?
