Actually it is worse than you note. You can access free-forums like this one, but you have to learn how to post with your cell-phone. At least a part of all those "no-posters" are cell users.
Face Book has turned us into antiques.

I know I should post more but although I look at what is being posted and commented on, most of the projects being discussed are outside my main interests and I have nothing constructive to add to the conversations. That said, I do find that I have most to say during my growing season which is when you are all basically down for the winter.

Having lurked here for several years, it does seem the amount of people posting has decreased. My experience with the internet seem to be that more people are getting tired of the monotony and just avoiding tech more than they used to.

The mobile version of the post editor is pretty feature poor compared to the destop version. On my cell, I read posts in mobile version (larger print) but post in the desktop version. Most popular browsers have a method to switch between mobile and desktop versions. Screenshots are from chrome on my android phone.   |

My recently-acquired smart phone is a PITA; I was fine with my old flip-phone and even better with my landline (I had a crazy client who'd call up to 11 PM with urgent problems; when she called at 6 AM one Saturday, I bought an answering machine that day); how I miss the days when people knew I was out working without my landline in my pocket or truck.
If you hammer your finger, it will make you "smart"; just saying.

That can be a good thing too as it can give the NH folk something to look at during winter down time, likewise when the season are reverse. though it would be nice if there a few more of us from SH posting, even some from southern Afrcia and South America would be great. |

Let me throw my two cents in here. I’m sort of like Rowan. I was initially impressed with the total gardening knowledge I found here. But find there’s too much talk about unproductive breeding experiments going on to keep my interest.
I garden seriously; trying to grow all my own food and still have lots to give away. My wife just spent the last two months canning mostly and freezing some for us to eat all year. (I’m still harvesting crops that don’t need to be canned or frozen.) I’m way too intense about it to get much joy out of unproductive breeding experiments. I’ve done some experiments, growing potatoes from seed, grafting tomatoes (couldn’t get a tomato/potato graft to take), gardening without any irrigation in an area that gets NO rain for probably three months during the summer, but they take away from my primary focus.
So, what I’ve found is that although there is some comment occasionally that interests me, I just don’t fit in. I think it’s cool that so many people here are learning about plant breeding, and all the associated horticulture, -- it is a worthwhile activity, but only a a very few are actually accomplishing something. I’m sure most are having fun, what more could one ask for in a hobby, but I just don’t relate.
I’m not complaining or whining, just explaining.

I would complain about the notion that what happens in the "off season" is not of interest; we are all on our Great Mother and what happens anywhere is of interest, though it may not be "gotta go out tomorrow and deal with that"; granted, Sohem is opposite to Norhem, but plants don't always know where they are, so we may learn from where we aren't how to deal with them where we are, in season. I think many of us file stuff away for later use.

One barrier for me posting more is the need to host photos on a second site. Since google photos changed,it's quite tedious, so I post less. I also think that within a limited community, we might have exhausted some topics of conversation - what more do keen, steve1 (amongst others) and me have left to say about purple snowpea breeding, for example?

My best guess is that some members join to ask for seeds of some of the really cool stuff people here have crossed, developed, and selected by private message.
I haven't posted as much as I should be, but my job and increased dedication to keep my garden well tended to has keep me really busy lately... I do however, find time to read everything posted here. Hopefully when I get my picture posting issues figured out, I'll do better with posting about some grow outs.

Hi. I see you just joined yesterday. Can I ask why? I mean, after lurking for years (same thing I did) have you now joined because you want to ask questions about something that interests you or you now want to participate in some other way? Thing is, you are not the member type I am talking about because you joined and posted immediately. I would really like to ask a member or two with zero posts who joined weeks, months, or a year+ ago why they joined but never participated. I wish some of them would respond. It is no big deal to me, I am just nosy and curious and I occasionally obsess about things when I cannot figure them out. More of a mental exercise than anything. Literally thousands of members who have zero posts. I am sure other forums regarding other subject matter aside from gardening/growing stuff have the exact same issue. I am certain Facebook has the same issue, likely to a much higher degree, but they will never admit to it because it would crash ad revenue. I know how they work, any person who ever joined Facebook in its entire history will be considered to be an active member, period. That is how they manipulate the numbers for ad revenue, although people and companies are finally figuring out what an overpriced fraud online advertising actually is. Welcome to you, by the way...  I finally decided to join because I read a few threads lately talking about decreasing activity and fewer active members. I always wanted to join but could never quite justify it until recently. I do plan to contribute on the occasions I can. I suppose I would like to ask what websites people like to order seeds from. I already have some stock, but I am planning on ordering enough seeds to hold me over for a few years. I'm just growing run-of-the-mill things like water/muskmelons, corn, beans, tomatoes, squash ,sweet/regular potatoes, and some walking onions. Im working towards landraces because I have been encouraged by the work of people on here, like Joseph Lofthouse. So far the only thing I have had much progress in is direct seeded peppers. Ive always tried to avoid facebook just for the fact it feels too "corporate" to me personally, too well rounded and unoffensive. And thank you for the Welcome. |

I think some folks use this site like a library book, lots of good info to read. They are, perhaps, timid to ask the beginner questions. Some sites ask one to use the search function to avoid asking the beginner stuff, and it took me a while to realize this site is not like that. Even if the question has been asked before, a new slant often shows up, as the poster is in a new location, different climate and soils, it's all good.
The other thing I like about this site is the varied nature of the growers here, some grow a little, some grow for sale, some feed their families, some have a pet project or two, lots of different viewpoints.
