Was cold and rainy on Friday, then warmed up into the 50s on Saturday and Sunday (planted peas and blackberries). Then it snowed Sunday night and well into Monday. Got more than half a foot of it, and the kids still had school because nobody expected snow in April (hasn't happened in 15 years.)
How quickly we forget. At least it watered the peas and blackberries in nicely.

The week's hot spell is broken today; sposed to be a possibly heavy storm coming Thursday into Saturday; hoping it'll do its thing on the farm, giving me Sunday/Monday for good work on the farm.

1/2 inch of wet snow here this morning, changing to rain now. Yuk, it's really messing with my garden work schedule.

Summer was very short this year. 2 days ago one of the most comfortable days ever. Snowed last night.

Cold again! Supposed to snow, or rain, or ice, or some sort of freezing precipitation tonight. Then, blessed be, sunny normal spring weather for a few days! high might clear 60F. I am so excited.

The peach tree was blooming today. And since today was a nice warm day with it now slightly overcast with moisture in the air and feeling like rain tonight i decided to plant the watermelons. So the main patch of watermelons is now planted. A bit haphazardly but whatever. Felt good to plant them. Snow is supposed to come Saturday and night temps get below freezing so hopefully we will still get peaches this year. Even if the worst were to happen with the watermelons and all of them died i still have the best and selected seed from last year so i'm good. This is the old seed from two seasons ago that still needs some selection to continue to remove more that are prone to fruit blossom end rot or other traits. Mixed in some yellow-rind seeds so perhaps i can re-introduce that trait to the landrace. Even better if it crossed with a well adapted yellow fleshed. Yellow flesh and yellow-rind would be pretty cool. But i think yellow-rind is a recessive trait so might be hard to find it again except by chance several seasons from now. I expect a higher percentage of red flesh in this batch of seeds than from saved seed from last year. But i'm optimistic. Can't push watermelon to love cooler weather without starting somewhere. I plan on planting two smaller patches of the citron-melon hybrids later. Not sure when, maybe a few weeks, maybe wait until early May. Whatever feels best. p.s. the peas are doing great.

Yesterday we hit 81 with strong dry wind all day. Today a little warmer at 83 but also a little less windy. Calling for highs in the 30s by Monday, probably the same front hitting you now. This is the second round of 80s this spring with the last one followed by low 20s, wouldn't surprise me if we see 20s again. Gets more interesting every year don't it?

"March in like a lion, out like a lamb"? This year the lion gathered the rest of the pride & marched into April. We are currently expecting the biggest snowfall of the "winter" in Spring, predictions of up to 18" in parts of upper Wisconsin. Considering that the hottest day of last "summer" was in the Fall, there is an odd sort of balance to that.

After a week in Australia i arrive home after we had the first killer frost, beans, tomatoes are gone for the season, one thing that surprised me is Stivia can handle frost, i always thought it was frost tender, even the flowers are ok.

Lightening moving in from the west, sun from the east, just hope the sun gets here first cause I don't think the lids to the cold frames are as secure as they should be.
