we had a fairly dry spell and hot so i was watering a little to keep the seeds i'd planted evenly moist. then we had about 4 inches of rain rather quickly to give all my water works a challenge. then much cooler the past few days which is very nice for heavy work getting done. very cool at night (low 40sF). then we're going to be creeping back up to the mid-80sF again. everything that is up and growing is doing ok with this sunshine helping out a great deal plus actual rain water instead of well water.
have some flowers on the tomatoes already.

It's turned cool here. High 70s F and mid 50s at night. I won't say I've never seen it this dry but certainly so for this time of year. Last year we had 21 inches of rain in first three weeks of June, this year zilch. Front garden is growing well but only because I've been watering. Nothing even sprouted in the back garden, I'm just going to leave it alone and see what happens when it finally does rain.
All the critters are acting weird, don't know what they are even after, digging holes of various sizes all over the place especially anywhere I've softened the ground with water. Climbing up on things and breaking the woman's flower pots. Pulled some sweet potatoes I had sprouting in the pond out and ate them, good thing though, they didn't eat the sprouted slips. Not even sure what is doing it all. I've trapped three squirrels and shot four rabbits. Last night a coon tore up an empty garbage can, weird. Possums are abundant and brazen, I haven't messed with them though as I'm pretty sure they are not the culprits in the damages and they eat a lot of ticks.

my brother lives just a few miles from Sanford, MI where one of the two dams was blown out during the heavy rains of May 19, 2020. their place is on a high spot near Averill, MI (just down the road) so they did not evacuate but they were up most of that night checking the water as it rose.
i haven't been up to visit him for some time, but the other day he finally could visit us (yes, we've all be on quarantine so it was ok). he described how it is there and that basically the whole town is now gone and that perhaps nobody will be reopening. the insurance companies aren't doing much, the state isn't doing much, even if they sue the dam owner there's not going to be much from that, etc. big mess...
weather wise, it has been very nice and sunny the past few days, today returns to warmer and hotter weather. no rain for about a week, but the last time it did rain it was a series of two storms which took out the power for hundreds of thousands of people. the last storm we had of that dumped about 4 inches of rain pretty quick but it had been dry enough that about half that soaked in before we started seeing puddles again. no rain in the forecast for a few days but heading back to 90sF (32C). i will be sweating off some of this blubber this week. which i need to do...

Down to 5c last night, similar forecast for tonight, won't be until Tuesday or a Wednesday before it warms up again they say. BUT. ..the ticks don't like this weather much so definitely a silver lining to this cloud!

for us ticks are brought in on the deer, if we don't get deer in the yard then there aren't any ticks. luckily the yard is rarely visited by me anyways, i stick to the gardens and pathways. i've seen some ticks this season so far but not as many as last year. added fence has helped cut down on deer traffic. there's not much growing very big now for deer to feed upon, they've eaten what was easy to get at.

Still just freaking hot here and dry. There are way, way more ticks here than used to be and new kinds. They seem almost to blow in the wind although I'm sure the state's deer herds are a huge boon to their populations.
We got a few drops and I do mean a few drops of rain a couple days ago but nothing in helpful amounts. It did feel nice while it was happening.
