And it's warmer in Buffalo, NY than it is on this side of the river??? What's with that?? Only 2 degrees C mind you, but still?

Yeah, I know. I've lived on the north side of Lake Ontario my entire life. I'm well acquainted with Lake Effect Snow. We had some of that yesterday along with very high winds.
But London is snow belt too and it's positively Sub-Tropical today, lol

-in some locales of the PNW (Pacific NorthWest), spring begins in mid-january and lasts until may or june -it begins with snowdrops and croci, followed by Prunus mume, the japanese flowering apricot whose insipid fruits are salted and turned in umeboshi plums, one of the macrobiotics staples for good health -we have been transplanting, out of the greenhouse, starts for lettuce, globe artichokes, romanesco broccoli into nicely tilled beds, pitchforked down the center to break up the tillers habitual hardpan, made during the dry period in most of february, wherein peas are just emerging from earlier plantings, plantings done weeks apart emerging from the soil at the same time -in the greenhouse we have been transplanting small seedlings from flats to pots; red and yellow maca, coreopsis, antirrhinums, brassicas, clivias, cymbidiums, cyrtanthus, crassulas, cacti, grafting avocadoes and citrus, waiting for the harbingers of spring a few who have appeared, the narcissi and fondly gazing over the many new leaves of the tulips, the gems yet to unfold

It was a nice day here, about 60, maybe a little warmer at times, about 80 in the big greenhouse. I seeded lots of brassicas in there today, getting ready to start on peppers and tomatoes.
I also worked a bit on improving the chicken coop today and am in the middle of working on a project with the small 8 foot by 8 foot Rion hobby greenhouse that we have had for a few years. I placed some gutters on the side at an angle and put some rain catchment barrels on the end to catch water, Ill tap those later. I also built a composting toilet in there and am working on a solar shower in there as well so as not to track so much soil into the house this year, of course it can still be used for drying seed, growing plants and cleaning produce this year.
Also picked up 10 lbs of red worms today after my little accident and loss of most of my culture a few weeks back. All in all a busy but beautiful day!
I'd like to get out and direct seed some lettuce and brassicas in the field soon, but the ground is so wet right now that I'm not sure I could work it up worth anything. Perhaps sometime this week.

Sounds like I'm late starting my brassicas... But after a day like today I feel like starting seeds (which I have been doing all evening).
Northerners, have no fear; spring is definitely on its way. I got the first true sign today - I got my first tick of 2009.
