I had a friend when I was in my late teens early 20's whose birthday was April 6th. Several years our plans to celebrate were dashed by Blizzard conditions. I've never ever forgotten that. Spring does not come to Southern (be it eastern or western) Ontario until the 2nd week of April

Here in NE Oklahoma we are experiencing SPRING! It's wonderful and one of the things I love about the region. We have spring a full month earlier than my native New Jersey and hard freezes almost a full month later in the fall. Right now the peaches are starting to flower as are the Bradford pears.
This region's challenge, however, is that temperatures fluctuate wildly. One day we might hit 90 F. and the next, it's possible to be down to 28 F. I'm hoping for peaches this year. But for the last two years the peach trees have set fruit and then, when the little fruit are about dime size, we have 28 F. for several nights in a row, effectively destroying the crop.

George, have you tried spray the peaches with water towards evening? I have heard that it will help down to -3F frost protection. This only what I have heard so please don't quote me. (unless of course it works and then I can shine as a fruit saving genius LOL)

Or a smudge fire is another option. Just be sure and check your local burn regulations before you do so.

Yeah.. finally a warm day without rain here too. Ah.. one beautifull day. Time to go out and do something in the garden.
I might try to get some peas in. I know it's early yet.. so i'll just go with some sugar snaps that i have lots of seed for. Just to give it a try.
Weatherman says it's gonna b 3-4 days where it'll be in the 50's or even low, low 60's. But he also had to bring up the fact that last year at this time.. we had a foot of snow between March 17th and April 17th. With our last big storm on April 15th. So, i know it's just a temporary spell of nice weather. Always does this.. but hey.. if i can get the peas sprouted before it goes back into the 20's at nite.. i think i can get in an early crop. I'm gonna give it a try anyways.

It's about 67 right now. Yesterday I got the roses all pruned (running a bit late this year!) and weeded and will fertilize in a day or so. The peach trees (except one, which I think is a goner) have bloomed and right now the redbuds are in full bloom. My sweet peas are heading up their trellis and the echinacea is all sprouted. Looks like the lilacs will be blooming this weekend. Lots of color around here!

In the 70's here today, yesterday, and tomorrow!
Yesterday I planted peas, kale, collards, poppies, hullless oats, raddishes, beats, turnips and some other things.
Today I spread on some compost, disced a field, tilled some beds, fixed the manure spreader with the help of my father, laid down some new chicken bedding, set a bantam on a nest, and got a brand new big, ugly, pile of rotten sawdust to replace the old pile of composted cow manure.
Tomorrow, I plant even more!

It was in the low 50's here today, so I worked at the farm this afternoon. Got the Cub Cadet running (new battery, new tire) and finally got it moved so I could get the '47 Massey Harris Model 30 running and out of the barn. Had planned to plow, but wound up bush hogging the briars around the fields instead.
Plowing tomorrow or Monday. I love spring!
Had to put gear oil in the Massey ... got it all over my hands ... boy, that stuff stinks ...

I am so jealous of all you people (especially the ones in zones colder than me) that are all out there, working on your beds. Here we still have a foot of snow on the ground (although it is well above freezing now).
In my desperation I dug down a foot to my bed to see what was happening and I was pleased to see the ground has actually thawed.
Now we just need to get rid of this pesky snow, and the work can begin!

It's been really nice here for several days running in the 50's and 60's and sometimes the 70's.
I have planted early crops three seperate occasions and probably planting another crop tomorrow.
