We've been on evacuation alert since yesterday morning. Lightening started a fire down in a canyon near the river near us. Difficult area for firefighters to stand. We had three planes and a chopper hauling water from the river all day yesterday. It's still uncontained today. Very smokie and the winds are coming in with this cold front. Hell of a summer, and I still can't find the camera...

Stay safe Bunkie! Two years ago we were surrounded by the Texas wildfires and at the time our well was completely dry. It's a very anxious feeling to be caught in such a situation. Sending positive thoughts!

I'm sure you've got the family albums, critter-cages, keep-sakes, and seed collection ready at hand; hope your preparations aren't necessary.
Was it last Summer that there were wildfires around the farm-valley? Might have been the year before (time flies like the wind, but fruit flies like bananas); in any event, it was something to see the fire coming through the mountains, to the West, watching the planes and copters working; had it gotten to the valley floor, it could have swept it clean, but they did their work well. I got some good pics, which I might someday learn to post. Really good one of the afternoon sun, all red and baleful, peering through the wall of smoke, like the Eye of Mordor.

Oh Bunkie, All I can do is hope for the best for you. My sister has told me the WA fires are just awful. Here too, there's so many fires burning in CA, I can't keep track of all of them. Everything is dry as tinder.

Thanks all! Great news! We still have to be ready to evac, just in case, but the fire has been preliminarily contained and hopefully completely soon!
This fire has got us thinking about a lot of things. As gardeners, breeders, homesteaders, etc..., I'm sure we all are saving our own seed and/or stacking up on seed, and preserving our harvests. One thing that stopped me dead in my tracks during this fire was when i figured out there was no way in heck we could take all these things with us! What's the good in stocking up if you can't save it during such a crisis.
I'd like to start a thread somewhere about how we could go about preserving our harvest and having seed stashes and being able to make sure they're safe when we come back if we had to evacuate.

Glad it's contained, what a relief. After our wildfire scare three years ago we made all sorts of evacuation plans for getting our animals out. I have moved all vital records, scans of family photos on disks, and seed bins all in one location ready to go if we need to leave quickly. Of course it needs to be updated again. But its good to have a plan in place and to be prepared.

Great news! Glad the immediate danger is past. Unfortunately, with the drought we are likely to have more worries in the future. Stay safe!

Thinking of protecting one's stores/stash in case of fire:
Depending on the volume to be stored, one might have one or more drums, and/or a metal shipping container, earth-sheltered in an area not flood-able, kept free of flammables. It occurs to me that an incline where one keeps critters might be ideal. Well earth-sheltered, such a storage place would tend to be kept at a very decent temperature for seed/food storage, at least in the short run, certainly probably adequate for fire protection.
Haven't worked out any very practical measures against meteor-strike, except "Duck!"

Looks like a scene from the Dust Bowl. Be sure not to breath that stuff Bunkie! Watching Ken Burns' documentary last year I learned about 'dust pneumonia'.

Incredible! Yes, I agree with flowerweaver, just like something out of the 1930's!
