for the next year i've planned to do some experience on breeding corn realy inspired to wath some of you do with sweetcorn; but having absolutely no idea of wath is the flawor of a sweet corn kernel i' m oriented on tryng for flour corn adapted to my climate, i have a long growing season but wen july arrive we have no more water for the veggie until late september so i wil create some diversity in fluor corn but with the sine qua non that it have to be realy hearly so it is ok wen the rain are gone. every imput, every info about growing sistem, seed source,or wathever can count is realy appreciate and if i have any good result of course it are shared in form of report and sed with all the people that are interested! oh my cortona- i think you said you do not know the taste of sweet corn?where you live, is sweet corn not used as a vegetable?? if you have never tasted it, send me a PM and i will send you some cans of sweet corn to taste! fresh is better but it gives you an idea.
have the same problems with hardly any rain here from late july through august. so i choose early varieties so i don't have to water much. I don' t know your climate or how early you can plant, if you can tell us that maybe some of our corn experts will share ideas with you.

realy, i've never tasted sweetcorn, here nobody know it as a vegetable, in the past people use dent corn at the milk stage but soon this use disappear. i've see the "strange"kernels of the s k wen some friends here share seeds with me. i live in a pretty mediteranean climate so i can plant corn probably in aprilor earlyer if the weater permit(if the soil is too wet i can simply make a step in the pathc because of my claish soil) but i have long season because the first frost is usal in last days of otober or sometime later, we have a more rayny spot in the secon part of august and after this in late october wen serius rain start. i want to ask if somebody can help me on requesting seeds to grin/usda for short season fluor corns thanks for the offer of canned sweet corn but i plan to sown some astronomy domine and other sweet corn in a friend's patch this spring in order to taste it and increase the seeds to share it with some other grower anyway thanks for reading and kep my post visible

I think your seasonal patterns and conditions mimic mine Cortona. We will be planting in early April and will probably harvest through July.
My father, native of Mallorca Spain, detests corn and swears that it is pig food. However, I think you will be most intrigued by the flavor of sweet corn. It can be steamed, roasted, grilled, boiled, or eaten raw. I am particularly fond of a light soup of tomatoes, corn, and okra. I am excited to hear your opinions!

Good project Emanuele. I also want to develop a locally adapted flour corn. I have a different climate with a summer rain and a reasonably short season (150 days frost free). I don't have the garden beds ready at the moment so my project will have to wait. I will follow your project with interest.

ray, the flour corns at nativeseeds.org are amazing, i would bet you could just drool over that germplasm and find something to work with. if you fall in love with something and they don't ship your way, let me know.

thanks Raymondo, i'm falled in love with the idea of using corn as flour producer here because as mj tel here corn is pig food;-) but tryng to have a more sef sufficence and know a bit about selecting crossing etc etc i've dreamed about this but in the past i've no land to use, but a relative give me the possibility to use is land(wel irrigated near the trasimeno lake so i've chatch the possibility and start to ask to people and surfing the net about corn variety. so we will see wath happen this spring.

hi corton! this will be an interesting experiment. i have hear that before, that in europe corn is only used for animal feed. it will be interesting to see what you think when you try and eat some sweet corn you grow...even the flour you might make.
there's another thing i haven't experimented with but it's called 'grits' or 'hominy grits' that are made from corn. i'm not sure of the process, but alan talks about it often. i hope to do them one day.

wel, in europe seet corn is almost unknow(exept uk) but here in italy we traditionaly eat flint corn in "polenta" it is made by boiled grinded corn and in the past a lot of different variety of different color are used around. but i continue to think that at today the important thingh are the ragù we put over it ;-) anyway i like it but this year i wil try this experiment in the future...who know? i have lots of possibility!that is the fun of being....connected thanks to all you that share your grdening experience with me and with the world

With polenta, you need to expose yourself to the wonderful world of tamale pie!
better yet
Golden polenta studded with ruby red kernals of sweet corn, fried in olive oil and served with a gentle grating of Pecorino Romano... ::sigh::

oh jo, that sounds really neat. i have never eaten polenta and don't know how to make it, guess i could find a recipe on allrecipes.com. do you use just just regular cornmeal? somehow i cant get my head around what cortona said, a tomato based gravy on cornbread is what my brain wants to make of it and it sounds- well, weird. probably as weird to meas sweet corn does to somebody who grew up believing corn was pig feed, instead of summers golden manna and Gods gift to real butter!
I wish we had a gardeners recipe room on this board, i bet i could learn amazing delicious new ways to use what we grow.
Hurry up winter, be over soon! We still have February to get through, then garden goodness starts again!
