This forum feeds on itself! Of course! It's a gardening forum after all! LOL Seriously though, think about it, when you get to this thread this is where all the other threads come together with real purpose. Sort of the "heart" of the forum?

I am totally making one of these and trying it out with rabbit dung!
We have a solar oven (I need to test it out, Ive used a lot of metal ductwork tape to repair a crack received in a storm. theyre awesome, so ill replace it if its done, but would much rather fix it if possible!) for cooking if I work a half-day. Point it past where the sun is now, and it got to well over 300 degrees when working optimally.
Im reading an article about grass as fuel- well, grass (hay) is bunny food first, then the dung is fuel, then its char for the garden! Jerry said no chicken poop burning tho. its too gross. It will be nice to have a backup cooker for quicker cooking.

Should any of the west coast members feel a sudden desire to go on an east coast excursion, we have accommodations.

I grew up on the East Coast in a city but my granmother lived in the small town (where I spent my formative teen years visiting her for long periods to get some "fresh air" ) where th Oregon Country fair is held each year ..there was an intentional community right near buy so we hung out a lot and OMG did I want to join them .they obviously were not post Armageddon or anything...but it was the 70's on the West Coast jobs were just not there ..the logging industry was starting to struggle I believe ...I know the gas lines were really long and I just had my driving permit and was driving a REALLY old Studebaker that someone pulled out of a hole on a farm (yes I ramble and there is a point) ...anyway these guys gathered with a furious desire to save the world by gathering to join forces for good...it ended up I am afraid as a horomonally misogynistic pit of poverty ..but two things I know about folks and intentional communities ..they are really hard because people do get along during building phases better but barely ..once you have finished your goal of building then what ..in general get along all that well for great periods of time
OBVIOUSLY!!! Look at our nation in general ..
one time I was doing a disaster planning thing for the Red Cross ..I was a shelter nurse and set up the kits...I was asking folks if they wanted to do a community visit to see who would like to do what about the potential of an earthquake and forming a disaster kit for the town
omg the drama
so would I gather with others..I would go out as a nurse and help on the streets and did sign up for a medical team to Japan...but when I went to whatever my little shetler was I just want to be alone and gather my energy ...I would give you what I grew if you needed it ..but I do not want to garden with anyone
so ther eyou have it
not a single person in that commune I knew regretted their intent and efforts and said it "ended because it had to"
so for a temporary thing I think they are great
I say donate blood you will feel better about all this shit going on

Every single high density population center began as an intentional community. Some, clearly last longer than others. Jerusalem, Gaza (a sanctuary city), Madrid, London, New York, Chicago, as a few examples of the longer lived ventures.

Heidi (and anyone else who remembers them) = The Rainbow Families still have their 4th of July celebrations every year = last one I attended was in 1984. If you don't know what they are do a Google. Some amazing people (and amazing druggies) attached to the movement. And this is in line with the thread and Heidi's last post.

The one I went to in '84 was still "old school", reps from some of the original communes that were started back when the world was still young and I still gave flying lessons (chemical, late 60's). Used to be a trip guide.

when there are no boundaries, folks are sure to get their feelings hurt. I am not against chemical mind expansion, I just think it should be an occasional journey. Moderation in most things, including moderation.
I never met (and i only met a few young ones) a Rainbow family member who could do much more than roll a great joint and 'spange for dinner, but Ive never been to a reunion.
I more mean folks with survival and food production skills, that could depend on each other if society as we know it ceases.

I'm not sure my original message got through....
If anyone of our west coast members is uncomfortable with the radiation, however small in amount, that is currently making landfall from Japan, they are welcome to stay with us for a bit.

I met some of the original members from some of the southern communes that started getting their foundations in the late 60's, early 70's. Some very together people that would work until they dropped if the farm needed it, but also some real weirdy beardies that I don't think needed drugs for the trips anymore. The really together ones were amazing people for the most part. If you have ever read the Tassajara Bread Book, or know anything about the Tassajara people, you know the type of together I mean. Not quite the road I wanted to walk, but people on an amazing and wonderful journey nonetheless.

If anyone of our west coast members is uncomfortable with the radiation, however small in amount, that is currently making landfall from Japan, they are welcome to stay with us for a bit. I have been watching the radiation in San Francisco, and it is just background radiation so far, I even counted air that was put through an air filter to catch the dust but I will remember your offer

this is an awesome thread!
I am going to say thank you for the offer..but rather than leave I will evolve
just by eating more shellfish to counter act the radiation exposure
kidding aside I am just going to go .. I signed up to go with a medical team it will probably be a year but what the Hell ..it was either that or give blood and I am anemic
