I've never wanted a Funny Farm or a Fat Farm, that's why I have a PlanT Farm ('way past PlanB).

After a week or more of humid, damp weather we dropped from 80s yesterday afternoon into the 50s this morning! Feels good but quite an abrupt arrival of Fall to PA. Hope it will be clear, dry and sunny for at least a few days . . .

We got a very light frost night before yesterday. Now we're warming up to the mid 60's for the next week, I think it's probably Indian Summer!

Likely freeze tonight. Possible snow tomorrow. Or maybe just rain. Temperature predicted right at freezing. Could be a few degrees one way or the other.

It's turned rather chilly here last several days. Highs in low 90s week or so ago and mid 40s now. This morning it's 41 with light drizzle. Just got the seasons first fire going in the wood stove. Stove is unpainted cast iron so I treat it like a skillet with beef fat. Nice day for it, cold enough to enjoy the heat, warm enough to have windows open as the fat burns off. Hasn't been done in some years so the stove is dull and even a little rust, when done it will be all shiny black again.

2 inches of snow Sunday night. Melted by mid-mornig and I saw a grasshopper jump up in front of me mid-morning. About 10 min. later, a cricket crawled out from under a pot. It didn't get very cold nor stay cold for long.

It has finally stopped raining. This time I think for real. For at least a week! The sun is out, the trees are in gorgeous autumn color and we're supposed to get our first frost tonight, at least inland. My house probably will only see the high 30s. But at least it's acting like proper October weather.

No real frost happened, but it got cold enough to damage the basil and a few leaves on some of the squash plants. Everything else still trucking. And it's been almost 7 days since it's rained! YAY!
(although it looks like New England might get its first snow storm of the year next Monday... let us not speak of this yet. Say the devil's name...)

Finally stopped raining yesterday and now the sun is shining brightly. Absolutely beautiful day! Historic flooding west of Austin, TX two weeks ago causing much damage and some loss of life. Austin Water is still under a mandatory boil order due to the filtration systems being overloaded by all the mud and debris in the lakes. Doesn't affect me as I live a good ways out of the city and am on a rural water supply system fed by deep wells. Probably be planting my garlic this weekend as now is the prime time for it. Nice to see the sun again.

Two more wildfires in Cali; I think Malibu (SoCal) is likely evacuated; Paradise (next county north of the farm) has been converted to Hell, utterly destroyed; Chico is threatened; the Bay Area has had the whitest sky I've ever seen due to that fire; I look to the farm with dread; I hate to breathe air I can see; no rain in the foreseeable future. At least temps are falling in areas that aren't burning. "Always look on the bright side of life". Yeah, I re-watched "The Life of Brian".

That might be dust down in Mexico and Florida but don't know of any concentrated sources of dust up in western Canada so it is still cooking pretty good too. No such thing as a fire season any more I guess, so don't have to worry about that. We got a few specks of snow overnight here.

It's seasonably cold here. Still wetter than anybody would like, the water table is so high it floods just about every time it rains, but we had a dry, sunny weekend so we got out and enjoyed it, staked the blackberries (20 foot canes in a single season!!!!) and split wood. Flurried a bit midday Saturday. NOAA is predicting a warmer than average winter, the oldtimers are predicting a cold one. Nobody seems to contest that it's gonna be a wet one. Wish I could send some rain out West.

Today's NWS forecast for our first taste of winter in PA has been upped to a possible 5-8 inches of frozen precipitation. Guess you may in for it too, mskrieger ! We'll see what happens; one inch would be plenty enough for me!
