We got about a 1/4 inch of ice this morning. Ground is pretty clear but the trees are all clicking and cracking. The dead Ash trees all are breaking and crashing. It is a strange eerie sound coming out of the woods all around.
There was one dead one left near the house that I was scared to tackle cause of how it was leaning and was hoping it would self trim to a height that isn't dangerous. IT DID!, all the top branches have broken out and fell harmlessly in a pile. It is no longer tall enough to hit the house even if it falls over from the base. I can now drop it and cut it up for fire wood.

Whew, glad it was a miss!
Several inches of snow in PA. Roads are a total mess. First storm of the season, poor forecasting (didn't turn to rain as expected), lots of accidents all over.
I guess Winter has arrived!

Today's NWS forecast for our first taste of winter in PA has been upped to a possible 5-8 inches of frozen precipitation. Guess you may in for it too, mskrieger ! Was I ever! I was working up in Storrs Mansfield in the NE corner of the state yesterday morning. I promised myself I'd leave at 2pm, but ended up staying until almost 3pm and it was Strategic Error. Didn't start snowing until I reached New Haven (the coast), but by the time I got to Bridgeport Interstate 95 was almost impassable. I got off to take local roads but it took me 1hr45min to cover the last 15 miles. At least everyone was driving in a polite and considerate manner, thank goodness I was in New England and not DC. My car has a new name: Snowy the Civic. And now the garden is all covered with snow and I still haven't dug the carrots or planted the garlic. Oy.

Still smokey in the Bay Area, although I'm told it's no worse than smoking half a pack a day, which I did for twenty years with no ill effects (hack!). It's getting comfortingly cooler, sometimes un-so; time to break out the thermal-under-T-shirt look. S'pose to be rain next week; we need it to dampen fire conditions and clear the air, besides needing the water.

It's raining again; so welcome; could only help with the fires, besides which my p'up needs to be washed and the farm soil needs hydrotherapy to loosen it up.

Had 8 inches of snow a few days ago. I-70 was closed so couldn't go to work. It's rapidly melting now. 8 inches of snow would be no big deal, but it came with 40 mile an hour wind, which drifted it bad. And it rained some first, so there was ice under the snow. Still, I was suprized I-70 was closed. It is usually sprayed with salt water when snow is predicted. Then it is salted. And snow plows run 24-7 until it is clear. Yes, it is usually closed a few times every winter, but not for 8 inches. It is early for a snow storm. Maybe the highway patrol just wasn't ready yet.

We had a nice wet fall but I have fears for the winter snow fall We need a lot more than we got last year. November was technically lacking for rain .

It's been seasonably cold and still on the wet side, here. I got the garlic and daffodils in under the wire...the ground was just starting to freeze in slabs.

We had freezing fog yesterday morning. Bright sun came up and for a little while till it stated burning it off everything single thing shimmered and sparkled. Every surface, every blade of grass every tree branch was covered in a soft white crystalline layer thick enough to obscure almost all other color, even on the cars. The tails and whiskers of the early rising squirrels that come to rob the bird feeder sparkled.
It persisted in shaded areas for a good while but the totality only lasted a few minutes. It followed the predawn show of a nearly full moon and bright stars shining through ice, as it froze and fell out of the air. No clouds, not a puff of wind, just ice in crystals too small to see, except in the reflections they made.
Few humans besides me got to see it, heavy price to pay for holiday revelry and late night TV, IMO.

Freezing fogs or hoarfrost as they are known here are not common around these parts but seen most winters to the south. they certainly can be beautiful alright.
Having a very cool cloudy and wet summer so far, some plants are loving others not so, peas potatoes onions are some of the best ive had for years, corn, camote, tomatoes and peppers all very slow. Good news though is the computer models are showing 10 days ahead of clear warm weather, so about time summer arriving.
