I want to grow really good tasting slicers for my mom, sister an a friend. I use tomatoes mostly for sauce. Can folks post their favorites for flavor? Also, since flavor is first, please post any drawbacks so that I can account for them. For example, if it needs more air space and so forth. I would also like advice for different colors (for flavor) too. Is there a yellow favorite? A pink?
Any information would be quite appreciated! Thanks, Robin

Keeping in mind that I don't eat tomatoes, I do have a list of my families and my customers favorites. It's all pretty common stuff so may not be of much use to you depending on how deeply you want to go into growing tomatoes and how eclectic you want to get with your selection.
Pink: Brandywine
Red: Rutgeurs, Marglobe
Yellow: Lemon Boy Hybrid
Orange: Golden Jubilee, Nebraska Wedding
Bi-Color: Mr. Stripey/Pineapple
Purple: Cherokee Purple
Black: Black Krim
Green When Ripe: Aunt Ruby's German Green
White: Great White
Hope that helps!

It certainly does because I don't eat tomatoes either! I only cook with, and make gifts out of them. Robin

My favorites for taste in no particular order:
Stump of the World Earl's Faux Dr. Wyche's Yellow-An excellent, sweet tasting orange that yields well too. Cherokee Purple Indian Stripe-A very good, not excellent, tasting variety, but the yield for me is huge. Aunt Gertie's Gold-The best orange I've ever eaten, but yields low for me. Lucky Cross-Very good taste but low yield for me.

I thought that I might have had seeds for Nebraska Wedding tomato but upon searcing I turned up none. Maybe someone else here has them to share. If not I do believe that they are still available through the SSE public catalouge.

Martin I was looking at the news tonight I'm really dreading the conference I have to attend in Nebraska on Feb 23. Any chance you could loan or split the use of one of them super thick Wisconsin winter coats ?

Thanks! I may have a source, not sure yet, if not, I'll go for your offer. Really I do not need more than 7-10 seeds. Thanks! Robin

I'm kinda partial to Delicious.. I like the flavor better than Brandywine and it grows better for me. I dunno, maybe the brandywine pink dosen't like my soil or maybe the weather conditions weren't right last year... but i didn't really care for it so much. I had so, so many others that were way better tasting last year, and without the core.
For cherry tomatoes, my favorite was black cherry. I'm not big on cherry tomatoes, but that one i really loved last year.
For yellow tomatoes, last season i didn't grow very many varieties. But out of the ones i did.. my favorites were Lillians yellow heirloom, and Orange Strawberry..(i guess that's actually orange) I liked em both mostly for the flavor.. but then they both had less seeds than many of the rest of my yellows. That was a bonus. Another memorable one was Ruffled... although i had a wide variation in sizes and flavors on my 5 plants. I couldn't exactly recommend it untill i figure out what it was actually supposed to produce. The largest, sweetest ones were of an excellent pineapple type flavor.. but then there were others that were more like stuffing tomatoes with little flavor... so the jury's still out on that one. I liked yellow peach for the texture, and it had a nice flavor.. but it didn't really produce all that much untill right before frost... so i guess it wouldn't be a favorite.. but i would grow it again.
Another favorite was Imp. Colossal Crimson... that one really impressed me all the way around, especially with the drought conditions. It had a really nice flavor... and produced better than most others too!
Anyways, hope that helps.. Dave
