I have received tomato seed this year from various trades from different places (forums, etc.). I find that people are not entirely careful when making out labels (no one from here I am glad to say). I have several seeds where I may have 2-3 of what I think is the same thing, but the written names are not quite identical. I am still hoping to start more tasty tomatoes, and I want to be sure I am starting the right ones. Does anyone know where I can find info to clarify this information? Thanks you, Robin

Robin,
Over the past three or four years that I have been online in the tomato hobby, I've noticed various spellings of the same varieties. I think part of this is people trying to translate messy handwriting in some cases, poor spelling in other cases, carelessness in transcribing correctly labeled varieties, and numerous other unintentional mistakes. I've watched certain people rant and rave and become snidely critical of these human errors. But I think the best thing to do is try and narrow it down to the most nearly correct spellings.
Some simple examples I've seen are:
Galina's spelled as Galinas. No biggie.
Neves Azorean Red spelled as Neves Azorian Red. Again, no biggie. But then I've seen some really wacked-out verisons of that one too.
Then you can get into some really wacky name morphing when the original name is bizarre to begin with. Are you having any particular problems that we can help you with?
Bill

Oh ... and I guess what I find particularly amusing is when someone who is a stickler for spelling tomato names correctly turns around and butchers the English language themselves ... like spelling "publicly" as "publically," or "a lot" as "alot," etc. :::Big Fat LOL:::

I hadn't noticed. And after all I have done to hype it, lol. Worked my typing fingers to the bone telling people what a great tomato it is. Seriously, the earliest very good to great dark for me here for the last couple of years, although Indian Stripe came in a few days later last year, another very pleasant surprise. How is it you spell it again? hehehehe... I was thinking Opalka or Rose de Berne, until I read Bill's post.

I want to grow really good tasting slicers for my mom, sister an a friend. I use tomatoes mostly for sauce. Can folks post their favorites for flavor? Also, since flavor is first, please post any drawbacks so that I can account for them. For example, if it needs more air space and so forth. I would also like advice for different colors (for flavor) too. Is there a yellow favorite? A pink? Any information would be quite appreciated! Reds - Cuostralee, Aker's WV, Chapman, Andrew Rahart's Jumbo Red, Germaid Red Pinks - Hege German Pink, Earl's Faux, Brandy Boy f1, Tidwell German, Gogosha, Aunt Ginny's Purple, Dora Darks - Indian Stripe, JD's Special C-Tex, Gary O'Sena, Cherokee Purple Greens - Green Giant, Spear's Tenn Green, Cherokee Green in a dry year (was so-so for me in 07 with the torrential spring rains I got) Yellow/gold/orange/bicolor - Aunt Gertie's Gold, Regina's Yellow, Tasmanian Blushing Yellow, Lucky Cross, Tom's Yellow Wonder Whites - none (imo)
