I'm so glad to see Cherokee Purple making so many lists! I am trying it this year. Last year was my first with heirlooms/op's, before that I was clueless, and just grew whatever caught my eye in the catologs. Two that really stood out for me were Galina's Yellow and Black Cherry (both cherry toms). I also had good black/dark tomatoes, Zigan was one, and Purple Price/Prince. Russian Persimon and Orange Jubilee (both orange) and Vova Yellow and Stupice were favorites with my tomato junkie. She also really liked Reisentraube, which was neat to grow, very prolific, but I wasn't so impressed with the taste. ( I don't really like the taste of tomatoes to begin with). I can't think of any reds that stood out in particular, except for a couple volunteers that may have been Beefsteak, I'm not sure. They produced really nice big red tomatoes, just wish I knew what they were for sure. I have lots of seeds, if you want to try any of those. Which reminds me, I have to get some packed up and sent out before people start wondering!!

Sammy, really good tasting reds IMHO are Stump of the World, Earl's Faux and Brandywine-Sudduth Strain, altho that guy usually yields low for me.
The best oranges I've ever tasted are Dr. Wyche's Yellow and Aunt Gertie's Gold, altho that one also yields low for me. I grew Jubilee once and it ripened only on the side facing the sun, which I thought was kinda bizarre.

I have "planted" more seeds based on the advice here, which has been very helpful. Although different people like different things, we can say that the tomatoes here are liked!
Any others? Thanks, Robin

I'm glad we have been of help to you friend. I am a firm believer that Rutgeurs, Jubilee, and Cherokee Purple should be in every garden. Market farm or Home garden doesn't matter. Cherokee Purple can be finicky but always ends up working out well for me here in Indiana and is a big hit at market, provided they get there without damage.

Mawkhawk - how many fruit on average do you get from Brandywine? I always hear them praised for taste, and bemoaned for low production, but what's the point of all that effort if you only get a few tomatoes? And that is weird with the Jubilee. I had good all around tomatoes from it. Stupice was a nice little red, mainly because it produced first, and quite a lot. I'll have to keep better records for myself this year. I guess the different colored ones stand out more in my mind, simply because they are different!

Geez, the few times that I grew Sudduth I only got prolly < 6 fruits from each plant, if that. But man, those were really, really good. Your mileage may vary. I know people who can get a ton of fruits from Aunt Gertie's Gold whereas I only get a few.
But I stopped growing both of these because of low production. You should grow them at least once tho just so you can taste them....

Well, I'll just have to try Brandywine then...any excuse to order more seeds. You'd think I have acres to plant, not feet, with the amount of plants I plan to try (or dream of trying!) I may have to try the grow bag idea, scattered around my yard. It'll make mowing what little grass there is left, even more fun!! Dodge mowing, a new sport for bored husbands!

I am so thrilled this thread is getting activity. I just keep planting the suggested tomatoes! I am really hoping this year to get some nice tomatoes for family, friends, and canning; moreover, I want good seed. That way, I can share, and grow plants to give away or sell for next year.
I had a yard sale here once, and mainly, the only things that sold were the stuff I grew! I sold corn stalks in a bunch ornamental corn, gourds, and other things. I sold 1 box of costume jewelry a friend had giving me and that was it!
So, I could have a tomato plant yard sale next year! Who knows?... Robin

Robin, I have a plant sale every spring, when my neighborhood has a huge yard sale. I sell lots of tomatoes, hosta division (those always sell out fast), herbs, houseplants, gonna try peppers this year and maybe some other things. Doesn't actually make me very much cash, but it pays for the compost I need and the soil I use. Plus I get to meet my neighbors and others who are interested in gardening, and I don't wind up composting all these extra plants that I love to grow, although when it's close to planting time, and I still have too many, I'm known to stop people in the streets to find homes for my extras. You should definitely try it. I've been doing it for a few years now, and I actually have some regulars, who would be disappointed if I didn't!!
